Our all volunteer Board and Advisory Board have expertise in various disciplines, as well as, real life experiences that assist UFK focus on the whole child and their health and wellness needs.
Chair, Dr. Carmen A. Stokes, RN, MSN, FNP, PhD.,
is a Professor of Nursing at University of Detroit Mercy’s School of Nursing. She has been actively involved in community health related projects and is currently involved with University of Michigan’s Healthy Environments Partnership, which examines and address social and physical environments that contribute to the risk of cardiovascular disease.
President, Katrina I. Crawley Martin, Esq.,
is a practicing attorney with 25 years of experience. She is the visionary and founder of JazzyKat and the JazzyKat Kids. Her grassroots efforts to empower children in health and wellness were recognized in 2012 when she won the Governor’s Fitness Award as the Champion for Health.
Secretary, Tiffany Crawford, is a musician, speaker, and mother of three. She is active in many children's causes and appeared on radio and talk shows that
are tailored to the views and opinions of youth and
the issues that they face. Inspired by her son who
has autism, her efforts are also dedicated towards
the rights of children with challenges both mental
and physical and bringing education to those who need assistance.
Pastor Tyran Meredith is the senior pastor of Detroit House of Judah, a non-denominational church started in 2002. Pastor Meredith has been very instrumental in the planning phase of several organizations and churches. He currently sits on the Board of Kingdom Global Ministries International, and travels the world doing mission work.
Tamara Smith, EA, is an accountant for small and medium size businesses and nonprofit entities. She previously served as Chief Accountant for the Detroit Free Press, and was the New York office Accountant for McKesson Beverages. She currently serves on the board of the Midnight Golf Program, and recently completed a Sign Language Program, which will assist UFK empower more children with our message of health and wellness.
Sharon D. Blessman, RN, MSIS, is the Founding Member of Blessman Consulting Services (BCS). BCS provides a wide range of Health and Informational Technology options to its clients in compliance, audits, and healthcare security. Sharon serves as the organization’s Community Health Liaison, where she ties UFK to the broader medical community.
Dr. Valerie Abbott, M.D., is the President and CEO of the Abbott Medical Group. Dr. Abbott currently holds a faculty appointment at Wayne State University as Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine. She is dual board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and enjoys working with families to achieve and maintain good health.
Dr. Cheri Y. Anderson, PhD., is the Owner and Director of Counselors and Creative Consultants, Inc. She provides consulting services for teachers and administrators addressing effective communication skills and conflict resolution. Dr. Anderson presents to organizations concerned with cultural sensitivity, human relationship skills, health and exercise, stress, gambling, and violence in the workplace.
Dr. Carol High Van Dyke, PsyD., is a clinical psychologist with a passion for helping young people and families gain an understanding about their personal issues to create more positive living environments. She created Teen Voices in 2002 to facilitate a radio show for teens that allows them to "say what they think and tell how they resolve personal issues.” Dr. High Van Dyke maintains a private practice where she specializes in children and adolescents, and is a resident psychologist for a local television station.
Dr. Denise White Perkins, M.D., PhD., is a Senior Staff Physician, and Director of the Institute on Multicultural Health, Henry Ford Health System. She is a primary investigator for numerous community based research projects in prevention, early detection, health education and care initiatives targeted at diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cholesterol and eye disease. She is also involved in the READ program that promotes early childhood reading and family interaction.
Gary Schwarze, is a Life Underwriter Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) that has been helping families for over 40 years through the use of Life Insurance, Tax-Deferred Annuities, and Disability Income. Although Gary has been a diabetic for over 45 years, he does not let it stop him from enjoying life with his family especially his eight grandchildren. He helps UFK encourage and educate others that a medical condition does not have to negatively affect your outlook on life.
Pete Thomas, in November, 2005, walked away from the finale of the hit reality show, NBC's The Biggest Loser both a winner - and a loser. Pete lost an amazing 185 pounds in nine months and with it an unhealthy lifestyle. The knowledge he gained revolutionized the way he eats and exercises, and Pete shares his knowledge and personal experiences as he assists adults fulfill their personal health and wellness goals.
